Counsellor Hiring Policy

  • All potential counsellors will complete an application. Counsellors must meet the requirements as outlined in the Counsellor Job Description. The Counsellor Committee will obtain 2 references for each application. References will be consulted where the counsellor is not previously known and when applicable. Interviews may be done if there are questions about the application and the requirements or on the counsellor committee discretion.

  • Applications for counsellors are open for as long as the Counsellor Committee deems necessary.

-Counsellors should be 17+ years of age to serve at Stones and Explorers weeks, 19+ years of age to serve at Rocks weeks, 20+ years of age to serve at Boulder weeks, and 21+ years of age to serve at Capstone weeks, or at the discretion of the Counsellor Committee. Counsellors may not be a camper and a counsellor in the same year (applicable to Stones / Explorers Counsellors).

-Counsellors are selected based on best possible fit. The counsellor committee may also give preference to applicants who apply earlier in the application process, to fill counsellor spots. The applicant’s application form, references, interview and criminal record check may be considered in this decision. Priority may be given to an applicant who has previously been a counsellor at Stepping Stones Bible Camp.

-Counsellors are not advised to do two consecutive weeks or more than two weeks of counselling in a summer. They may request to do so and this is at the discretion of the counsellor committee.

-Counsellors are required to sign a form that indicates that he/she is free of any pending criminal charges or convictions that would preclude them from working with children. All counsellors are required to undergo a Criminal Record Check prior to coming to camp. Criminal Record Checks are required if the person has not served at camp for the last four months. A Vulnerable Sector Search (or international equivalent) is required, at least once, for every counsellor over the age of 23.

-All counsellors are required to agree to the organization's “Code of Conduct” (linked below).
